CITB Apprenticeship grants increase
Today CITB is announcing a major investment to help employers with the cost of taking on apprentices.
From 1 April, CITB Attendance Grants will increase to £2,500 per year, to help employers with the costs of providing high-quality apprenticeships. CITB Achievement Grants will rise to £3,500 for employers whose apprentice successfully completes their training. This means construction employers can receive up to £14,500 for each apprentice they take on - an increase of over 30%.
Apprenticeships are critical to our industry and its future. CITB’s decision to increase apprenticeship grants for employers is to help respond to falling construction apprenticeship numbers, especially at a time when the industry needs to fill 168,500 new jobs over the next five years.
A number of reasons account for this decline. Employers are adjusting to the new apprenticeship reforms, including the Apprenticeship Levy. The economy has slowed down. Concerns around Brexit are weighing on clients and investors, creating a knock-on effect on contractors and their ability to take on apprentices. Yet as an industry we need to grow more of our own talent as the UK prepares to leave the European Union.
The new grant rates will be welcome news for employers who have seen increases in the day-to-day costs of apprenticeships over recent years. The grants will also provide an incentive to ensure apprentice complete their courses and remain within the industry. The announcement follows extensive consultation with employers nationwide in the form of discussions, online surveys and feedback from events.
For your further information, I have attached the press release we will issue today to announce the grant increases. Look out for a copy of an email that we will send to levy registered employers to raise awareness of the increases. This will be sent to you separately today to enable you to raise awareness of the uplift with your members.
